Tack, fold and fit: the plates are attached to the component and shaped to suit the joint preparation. They serve as run-on or run-off pieces at the edge of the joint.

The plate is first tack welded, then folded and fitted to the joint. The photographs show this preparation and the dressed tack weld.
Plate thickness, material and joint configuration determine the appropriate version.
